Although Island Dreams is not a martial art film, producer
Kenneth Au wanted to add some of the flavor of Philippine culture. What’s better than
Filipino Martial Arts (FMA), the art of stick fighting? It is a Filipino national
sport supported by the President. The modern term is "Arnis" and there
are other names like Eskrima and Kali which are all related, but through
different regions, languages and history which is the reason for the names. You might not know it but you may have seen
Filipino Martial Arts in films like Book of Eli, the Bourne Movie Series, Man
From Nowhere, Sinners and Saints and others. It looks practical and effective
without any fancy high flying kicks kind of like street fighting. Not many
mainstream movie goers are familiar with FMA outside of the Philippines unless they are martial artist.
That’s the more reason why producer wants to introduce this practical art
of war internationally. Ken Au Pictures Production would love to make an action film featuring FMA and we hope to have the opportunity one day.
Producer Ken saw a YouTube video of Punong Lakan Garitony Nicolas doing a demo in his studio and was very impressed with his style. He immediately hired Master Nicolas to help him with the fight training and choreography of the film. Master Garitony Nicolas with his love of the arts, tirelessly promptes the art of Arnis everywhere he goes. His energy, love and professionalism was apparent on the set during the shooting of Island Dreams. At various times during the shoot, he gave the crew a blessing when he sensed bad vibes or trouble in the air. The producer was very grateful and they have becomes good friends since . Ken Au Pictures Production became a proud sponsor to one of Master Nicolas event ‘Arnis Pang-Oran Tournament’ back in March 9, 2013 at the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) Headquarter in Makati City, Philippines.
