The title 'Island Dreams' and the theme about the journey were my creation. I came across this quote one day and had a deep resonance about it. Actually I didn't really fully understand it at first but I do agree with the intellectual thinking. Pondering for some times in a period of months I decided to explore this theme in a comedy drama film. I got inspire to make an indie film during my time working as a visual effects supervisor on the set of ‘Canakkale 1915 Resurrection’ in Turkey. Although it was a war documentary film, I felt motivated to do something different than VFX business.
As soon as I got back home. I started to develop a story and came up with the theme and title. Eventually I wrote an original screenplay but was deem too ambitious by director Aloy so I had to settle for a more simplistic story and eventually became a romantic comedy. Being this was my first time producing I better listen and we changed it during our pre-production. Things were in motion and my timetable was tight as my wife and I were expecting our first baby. The whole process of film-making is a journey in itself needless to say. I love the title because of its simplicity and immediate registration. Island has a double meaning from the character Zach traveling to the island resort and also reflect the more than 7,000 Islands of the Philippines. Dreams are the aspiration of the character Julie wanting to be a popular singer. You can say we all have dreams.
I also wanted the audience to contemplate about the theme and message before seeing the movie which is the reason I put the quote on the movie poster and here in the website. Taking an analogy in art appreciation such as abstract expressionist and minimalist paintings viewer may scratch there heads as to what it is all about but when reading the title or theme in my case the audience will gravitates toward the artist mind much closer. Here I post some links below about journey of the head to the heart.
